Popular low-carb ice cream maker Rebel Creamery has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in federal court.

The bankruptcy filing comes directly after a federal judge ordered Rebel to pay rival Van Leeuwen $23.8 million in disgorged profits.

A court ruling found that Rebel intentionally copied Van Leeuwen’s signature monochrome, pastel-colored, minimalist pint designs.

Alongside the heavy financial penalty, the judge ordered Rebel to completely redesign its product packaging nationwide.

In its bankruptcy court filings, the Utah-based creamery reported estimated assets and liabilities between $10 million and $50 million.

Rebel Creamery filed a formal legal appeal against the $23.8 million verdict just days before submitting its Chapter 11 paperwork.

The brand plans to restructure its debts while continuing operations and maintaining retail shelf presence across the United States.
